Pepsis, Wasp Who Can Beat Tarantulas. Have you heard of tarantulas? Tarantula is the human term for a type of spider that is large and hairy.

Because of its creepy appearance, many people are afraid of this spider. However, have readers here ever wondered what kind of animal would hunt such terrifying animals as tarantulas? How? Don't have the answer yet?

Okay, believe it or not, an animal that is one of the main enemies of a tarantula is a kind of wasp. Do not believe? Let's continue reading my writing.

Maybe some readers still don't believe the sentence I just wrote in the previous paragraph. One of the main enemies of a tarantula is nothing more than a wasp?

That's very true, don't be surprised. In fact, there are wasps like that that live hunting tarantula spiders. The wasp referred to here is a tarantula wasp or often referred to as a tarantula hawk, even though the animal is really a wasp, not an eagle or the like.

There are several species of wasps that can be referred to as tarantula hawk, all of which are divided into two genera: the genus Pepsis and the genus Hemipepsis. However, the discussion in my article this time will focus on the pepsis genus which is also the most commonly found tarantula hawk genus.

Tarantula Hunter and Attacker

Now we are talking about the behavior that earned this wasp the nickname of the tarantula hawk. Tarantula hawks are actually solitary wasps that live in the nectar of flowers. When mating season arrives, males will perch on tall plant stems to see which females can mate.

When the male finds a suitable female, the two will then mate on top of the plant in question. The married female wasp will then hunt for tarantulas where the tarantulas will be used as food supplies for the young wasps.

When hunting, female tarantula hawk usually hunt during the tarantula mating season, where many male tarantulas go back and forth looking for their tarantula mates.

When hunting, usually female tarantula hawk will just walk around on the ground until they find traces of the tarantula's scent which they then use as a guide to find the tarantula's whereabouts.

After finding a tarantula target, the female tarantula hawk will move quickly towards the tarantula and occasionally sense the target with its antennae.

Tarantulas touched by a wasp antenna usually will not bite immediately, but only limited to lifting the front legs and fangs to make it look more grim.

When a female tarantula hawk finds an attackable gap in the tarantula, the wasp immediately rushes between the tarantula's legs and stings the tarantula's underside. If stung, the tarantula is immediately paralyzed and unable to move or fight, but is still alive.

The tarantula hawk that succeeds in paralyzing its opponent will then drag the tarantula target into the underground burrow that it has made, lay an egg on it, then insert the hole into the burrow.

If a tarantula hawk conquers its opponent in the tarantula's nest, it will only re-insert the paralyzed tarantula into its own nest and then leave the eggs on top of the tarantula's body.

The eggs will then hatch into live larvae by eating tarantulas that have been abandoned by their parents until they finally metamorphose into adult cocoons and wasps. By: Ochie
